VHS-C
Generally the most common camcorder tape for older recordings. Uses an adapter to make the tape playable in any VCR. Inexpensive, this was a great alternitive to recording directly onto a large VHS tape.
Video8/Hi-8/ Hi-8Digital
Created as a rival to the larger VHS-C, this tape records at a higher resolution. As the tapes evolved, they also gained more capacity with some recording up to 120 minutes.
Mini-dv
These tapes have as good, if not better, video and sound quality as either of their predecessors. If you are lucky enough to have used these, these are arguably the best to digitize
